The Witcher entered the mainstream consciousness as a video game series, and its latest instalment – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – was released to overwhelmingly positive reviews.
However, the games are actually based on a series of novels and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, a Polish science-fiction and fantasy writer. Now, there are plans to turn the hit series into a full-length movie, with a premiere date set for 2017.
According to Platige Films, the film will draw from themes in the The Witcher and Lesser Evil short stories, both from Sapkowski’s collection titled The Last Wish. Oscar-nominated director Tomasz Bagiński will be helming the film. Platige Films has also roped in the Sean Daniel Company, the American production company that produced The Mummy franchise, as its official partner.
The 2017 film will serve as an introduction to the Witcher universe and is the first in what will be a series of films. It centers around Geralt the witcher, the hero of both the games and the books. Whether it’s Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, or Game of Thrones, we’re just suckers for epic space operas and high fantasy. Bring it on!
