Sony has started to join the competition in phablet market. At the Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai yesterday, the company introduced its new 6.4″ Xperia Z Ultra which it claims to have the world’s slimmest and largest Full HD smartphone display.
The 1,920-by-1,080 display on the Xperia Z Ultra uses Sony’s Triluminos technology for richer colors, as well as X-Reality, which “analyzes each image and reproduces lacking pixels to optimize quality for the sharpest videos. The phablet features a new quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz and runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It comes with 16 GB of storage on board, expandable up to 64 GB via microSD.[more…]
The Xperia Z Ultra features an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with 16x zoom, HD video recording, auto focus, continue burst mode, face detection, geo-tagging, image stabilization, and more. A 2-megapixel front-facing camera is also available for video chat and selfies.
The 3000 mAh battery will provide up to 11-14 hours of talk time depending on your network, up to 120 hours of music-listening time, and up to 5.5 hours of video playback. Sony said its Battery Stamina mode will recognize when you’re not using the display and turn off things you don’t need while allowing necessary notifications.
With an impressive rating of IP55 and IP58, the phablet isn’t only resistant to dust, but is waterproof too – giving you the freedom to enjoy it anywhere. The device can film in full HD underwater, Sony said, and should work in up to five feet of water for about 30 minutes. The front and back of the 6.5mm Xperia Z Ultra is made of tempered glass, housed in a solid metal frame, weighing just 212 grams for ultimate portability. It will come in black, white, or purple.
Sony’s latest flagship smartphone is scheduled to launch in the third quarter this year (exact timing of availability will vary by market).
