Parents tend to throw away their baby’s dirty diapers after being worn. But a new kind of digital diaper may cause moms and dads to pause before taking out the trash.
Pixie Scientific, a New York-based startup has created the Digital Diapers, which are designed to keep track of a child’s health by assessing his or her urine. Using a mobile app, parents can scan the QR code on front of the diaper to track and determine the health of an infant through urine analysis. The label is comprised of colorful squares, which deepen in color depending on their interaction with protein, water or bacteria in the diaper.
After scanning a used diaper embedded with the labels using a smartphone, an app uses algorithms to analyze the results for abnormalities like an impending urinary tract infection, dehydration, kidney function and even type 1 diabetes. With parents’ permission, the information can even be sent to a physician who can then diagnose the child with any serious problems.
While the diaper is a great idea in theory, could this product creates confidence to parents? We will see in the future.
