Google Glass is one of the newest efforts carried out by Google to develop an augmented reality experience by simply putting on a pair of glasses. However, the company is longer the only developer in such wearable technology as the Chinese search engine giant Baidu, is also creating its own version of the tech accessory.
“Baidu Eye” is the internal code name for the Baidu’s version of Google Glass. It features speech recognition for Mandarin, as well as image search, which pulls up relevant information based on a photo. Though the Baidu Eye is said to be a different product from Glass in terms of functionality, it’s similar in that the device is also an “ocular wearable interface.
The existence of the device has been confirmed by Baidu’s director of international communications, Kaiser Kuo. “We’re doing some internal testing on it now on a small scale, and evaluating where this goes from here. That’s why we didn’t make any public official announcement on this,” Kuo told Mashable.
According to The China Daily, both the Google Glass and Baidu Eye will likely be manufactured by Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group.
